"Parenting is hard. And awesome. And the best thing ever. And it's so hard. And amazing. It's a mess of contradictions and we can't get through it alone. Let's get through it together."
Following sell-out performances across the North Island, blogger Emily Writes' best-selling book Rants in the Dark takes to the stage in Christchurch.
Emily’s heartfelt and hilarious writing explores her parenting experience, offering comfort and connection to other exhausted parents all over the world. Honest, authentic and laugh-out-loud funny, the play is full of the things that every parent thinks at 4 o'clock in the morning, but would rarely be brave enough to say out loud.

Press Reviews
"Rants in the Dark is a well-staged, cleverly-lit, dynamic reimagining of the book, packed as it is with visual humour, imaginative props and resourceful use of digital backdrops."
Fiona S Giles
"The resounding feedback from mothers who watch this show is 'I feel seen'. But this show is definitely not just for mothers; it is for anyone who knows a mother, or has one, or has ever been a baby. The subject matter is relevant, provocative, and unfiltered. The feelings are real. The stories are true. Now that we’re finally allowed to enjoy the theatre again, book your tickets, and share the experience with someone who needs a good laugh (and maybe a night off from their kids)."
Sophie Ricketts
"Sometimes it turns out the movie - or play - is just as good as the book. Rants in the Dark is a hilarious play for anyone, not just new mothers"
Eleanor Wenman
"The mother of all theatrical experiences. Rants In The Dark is a profoundly joyous experience – there are belly laughs – but the best bits I think is when you can hear a murmur from the audience. You can feel the nods, you hear acknowledgment of a point, whether wiping at an eye or stifling a guffaw, the audience moves and feels with the words, swept up and away due the efforts of the performers and the care from the writers and director."
Simon Sweetman
"Rants in the Dark managed to make me, childless and solitary as I am, cry four times and laugh hysterically throughout. I can’t imagine what it will do to those who have actually sat up at 3am just like Emily Writes, wondering if they’re doing a good job – and from what I gathered from the show, they are."
