Expressions of Interest: Director for The Court Theatre’s Youth Company Production of Six Characters in Search of an Author

Location: The Court Theatre, Christchurch, New Zealand
Season: Saturday 30 August – Saturday 13 September 2025
Rehearsal Period: Approximately 1 May - 29 August 2025 (Exact start date to be arranged with successful candidate)

The Court Theatre is seeking an innovative and passionate director to lead the 2025 Youth Company production of Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello. This iconic and thought-provoking play explores themes of identity, reality, and the boundaries between fiction and truth, making it a perfect challenge for our talented Youth Company.

About the Opportunity:

As director, you will guide a company of young, emerging performers (aged 17–24) through the creative journey of interpreting, adapting and staging this classic play. You will work collaboratively with the Youth Company, fostering their growth as theatre-makers while bringing a bold and fresh vision to this production.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct and lead rehearsals, providing a supportive and inspiring environment for the Youth Company.
  • Collaborate with the creative team, including designers, technical staff, and the Education and Engagement team, to develop a cohesive production.
  • Mentor and support the Youth Company actors, guiding their development as performers and creative thinkers.
  • Mentor one member of The Court Youth Crew, helping to develop their capacity as a future director.
  • Uphold The Court Theatre’s values of excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement throughout the production process.
We are looking for someone who:
  • Has prior experience directing theatre, ideally with young or emerging performers.
  • Demonstrates a clear artistic vision and innovative approach to staging Six Characters in Search of an Author.
  • Is skilled at working collaboratively with a creative team and performers.
  • Has excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Shares a passion for nurturing the next generation of theatre practitioners.
Key Dates:
  • Rehearsals: Approximately 1 May – 15 August 2025. Two sessions weekly: Wednesday 6-9pm and Saturday 1-4pm. Additional rehearsals leading up to production week to be arranged with successful candidate.
  • Production week: 18 August – 29 August 2025.
  • Performances: Ten performances across a season running from 30 August – 13 September 2025.
