William graduated from of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School in 1979 and Swinburne Film School (Melbourne, Australia – Now Victorian College of the Arts) in 1991 (Bachelor of Arts – Film and Television).

He was Artistic Director of Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North from 1984-86 and Downstage Theatre in Wellington from 1994-96. He was a core cast member of television’s Close To Home during the early 80s and has featured in many New Zealand television programmes since, including Frontline; Shortland St; Country GP; The Cult; The Interrogators and Rude Awakenings.

He has won prestigious awards for his short film Mum’s Xmas at the Sydney Film Festival and Drifting Clouds International Short Film Festival (Best Director, 1990). His play Take Me Home Mr! won him a Chapman Tripp award for Most Promising New Playwright in 1993. William produced and directed two hugely successful National Tours of John Godber’s Bouncers in 1987 and 1988.

William was last seen at the Court Theatre in 2003 when he played Magwitch in Great Expectations and in 2015's Exit the King. He is currently the Head of the Drama Department at Whangarei Girls’ High School where he remains a productive and prolific playwright and director.
