Tony Smaller

Tony De Goldi is a Scenic Artist working predominantly as a Theatre and Exhibition Designer and has been designing sets, props and costumes for the past three decades.

Tony has taught design at tertiary level and is presently Senior Tutor Production and design at Toi Whakaari.

Theatre credits include Kiwi Moon; Seasons; Odd One Out and Hinepau (Capital E - National Children’s Theatre New Zealand), The Biggest (Tikapa Theatre, New Zealand Premiere Wellington; Auckland Arts Festival), The Vultures (Tawata Productions, Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland); Riverside Kings (IKenSo Productions, Wellington), set for Fresh off The Boat and costumes for A Streetcar Named Desire for The Court Theatre. 

Operatic credits include Hohepa and Noyes Flood (New Zealand Opera); Il Corsaro and Orpheus and the Underworld (Te Koki Victoria University School of Music).

Tony and Set Designer Mark McEntyre as Art Collective GOM designed Set, Costumes and Props for Wellington Opera’s La Traviata (2022) and Lucia di Lammermoor (2023) at the St James Theatre in Wellington and also for the Pacific Underground/Auckland Theatre Company's sell out production of Oscar Kightley's Dawn Raids.

Tony's theatre practice is transferable into film and he worked as Art Department on Tusi Tamasese's 2016 feature film One Thousand Ropes and for Miria George’s 2021 short film Fire in the Water, Fire in the Sky. Tony has also represented NZ theatre design at five Prestigious Prague Quadrennial's 1995-2015.
