Apirana is a nationally and internationally published poet, short story writer, storyteller, playwright, novelist, actor and painter.
His previous theatre credits include Broken Arse; Nga Tangata Toa; Whakapakari raua ko Whakawaea; Taku Raukura and Tu. His television credits include The Kina Factory; Te Kai a Te Rangatira; The Swiss Family Robinson; Colenso; Tiger Country; Moby Dick; Kehua and Ka Mate.
Apirana is a founding member of Te Ohu Whakaari, a Māori theatre co-op. He was named the best debut actor by the Dominion Post and the Evening Post for his performance in The Kuia and the Spider by Patricia Grace.
One of Apirana's poems is engraved in stone on the steps on the bank of the River Avon next to the Bridge of Remembrance.
