The Court Theatre has announced its brand-new Meridian Energy 2019/2020 Season, packed full of vibrant and exciting productions!

“This is a season which includes invigorating plays from overseas with a stunning platter of New Zealand work; some proven and some brand new. The season is rounded out by some of the best scripts ever written,” says Artistic Director Ross Gumbley.

On the mainstage The Father kicks things off in August with its absorbing story of dementia, followed by Kiwi comedy The Pink Hammer, celebrating New Zealand Theatre Month.

Rounding out 2019 is Pasifika comedy Fresh Off the Boat, before we present our summer spectacle, the whimsical family-friendly production of The Wind in the Willows.

Up first in 2020 is Pulitzer Prize Winning classic A Streetcar Named Desire, before brand-new Kiwi comedy Lysander’s Aunty shakes things up with its Shakespeare inspired bush comedy.

Finally, critical hit Hir will bring a burning, black comedy to the stage, before breath-taking musical Rent will showcase the musical talents of our theatre.

“All of these plays, and the work of The Court company as a whole, allow us to offer you an artistically vibrant time in the theatre,” says Gumbley.

Over in The Court’s studio theatre, The Forge at The Court, a series of productions will be staged throughout the year that speak to our need to be kind to one another – starting with haunting father-daughter drama The Arsonists.

Au Ko Tuvalu then provides an essential and bittersweet story of climate change, while returning hits A Christmas Carol, The Early Early Late Show and Scared Scriptless will all continue to bring laughter to Canterbury audiences throughout 2019 and 2020.

There’s plenty of magic for the kids, too, in brand-new plays The Princess and the Frog (and the Robber!); Escape from Haunted House; Little Bo Peep and the Sheep Rustlers; The Ferocious Animals Petting Zoo; and The Pied Piper, all designed to ignite a love of theatre in our littlest audience members.

Last but not least are the productions created by our Court Youth Company (Boudica and Brainstorm) and our rehearsed reading series, Fresh Ink.

There’s something for everyone in the new Meridian Energy 2019/2020 Season, so explore our vibrant programme now.
