A Māori and Pasifika Development Season

Ē Toru is the next step in The Court Theatre’s ongoing strategy and commitment to engaging with Māori and Pasifika artists from Ōtautahi. Ē Toru will support the creation of new work by Māori and Pasifika artists by inviting and enabling them to tell their stories on stage at The Court Theatre.

Ē Toru will take three new works by emerging or established Māori or Pasifika artists or companies and look at how the resource and knowledge of the Court can meet with the expertise and authentic voice of the selected companies and accelerate the development of new works.

The Court will commit to three new pieces of work. Each piece will be assisted through its creation with dramaturgical, directorial or logistical support and be given a one off work in progress public showing at The Court Theatre on either August 9, 10 or 11, 2018.

To apply for the Ē Toru initiative we ask that applicants submit a simple one page document briefly outlining:

  • The concept for the new work you would like to develop in conjunction with The Forge
  • A brief overview of your company or collective including the details of any of your significant pieces of work.

From these initial submissions we will invite select companies to come matapaki with Court Theatre Artistic Director Ross Gumbley, Director of The Forge Dan Bain and Kāihapai Toi (Māori and Pasifika producer) Morehu Solomon. From these informal discussions the three works that will form the basis of Ē Toru will be selected.

Once these pieces are selected we will work in dialogue with the selected company to create a development pathway that best serves the objectives of the collaboration.

The timeline for this process is as follows:

  • Written submissions due - November 30th
  • Decisions on companies invited to pitch - December 1st
  • Pitches will run at a convenient time for all parties - Dec 4th – 7th

If you require assistance or further guidance for your written or spoken pitches, in the first instance contact Morehu Solomon via email at morehu.solomon@courttheatre.org.nz

We are very excited to see what will come of this collaboration.
